About the Chester, New Jersey Area
Just 45 minutes west of New York City in Morris County, Chester has an historic charm and is known for its vast estates and Victorian architecture. Chester has preserved farm lands in the area through public investment, as well as maintaining town ordinances that greatly constrain development in the area. This helps to keep the semi-rural quality that attracts people to Chester for both seasonal celebrations and for a quality of life not found in the city.
History Chester Township, formerly Black River, had its start like many towns in the area as an agrarian based economy. By the 1800’s the iron industry fueled a rapid population explosion in Chester creating a bustling community and economy. But with the discovery of cheap available iron in Minnesota, the industry quickly collapsed and Chester returned to its quieter agrarian demeanor for a time.
Chester continued to draw visitors for its picturesque beauty, clean air, and easy transportation and became known as a resort area. The first housing development appeared in the early 1960’s accompanied by its first real town infrastructure -- a police department. This was before limits on development were legislated and the process of preserving farmlands began. Development today tends to be single estate homes on large parcels.
Chester’s median household income in 2000 was $133,586. Population is currently around 8000.
Recreation & Entertainment With eight town parks there is plenty of opportunity to get outside! MacGregor Park and Evan's Preserve offer hikers many trail options - from short hikes to longer day hikes. Tiger Brook Park has the addition of fishing in it's resevior. Chubb Park and Black River Park offer recreational facilities for the whole family, especially ballparks and multi-purpose fields.
Chester also boasts many farms and a new ‘agritourism’ industry catering to those looking for farm fresh produce and a day in the country. Visit Alstede Farms for fresh, seasonal produce and flowers; visit their Corn Maze every Autumn until Thanksgiving, or pick up a holiday pie during the holiday season!
Check out the historic, but functioning grist mill at Cooper Gristmill.
The town has been a popular destination for antique collectors over the years, but shops in the quaint historic downtown area now include galleries and fine crafts, along with boutiques and great restaurants.

Disclosure Laws >Hard Sell
Many real estate listings come from individuals who thought they had sold their homes. Sellers who try to sell their own home learn the hard way that selling a home is not easy. Keeping it sold and getting to the closing table is even more difficult. What are the pitfalls involved in selling your own home?
Face-to-face negotiations can be difficult, even when the buyer really wants the house. Then there is the paperwork. Standard contract forms rarely cover all of the local requirements regarding disclosure laws. Such contracts may provide loopholes which could allow a buyer with cold feet to back out at the last minute.
When you have finally come to an agreement, how can you be sure that your buyers will engage competent professionals to handle their loan and complete the closing? What if structural problems are discovered or property boundary problems are revealed? The experience and expertise of a professional real estate agent is your greatest asset in concluding a successful transaction.
